Access Tip – Useful formatting tips

Every field in an Access table has properties that can be set to alter its behaviour. This can be done in the design view (click the button in the bottom right corner). Some useful “Format” properties to set for text fields are as follows:

  • Typing the symbol “<” forces all characters in the field to become lowercase.
  • Typing the symbol “>” forces all characters in the field to become uppercase.

In addition, typing a semicolon into the format property will display a default entry for fields that have not yet been given a value. I.e. the setting shown in the following screenshot will display the text (Blank) when the field has no values and otherwise it will capitalise its value:
